Upcoming Transition to a Roundabout: Portugal Cove Road, Major’s Path and Airport Heights Drive
Work continues on the new roundabout at the intersection of Portugal Cove Road, Major’s Path and Airport Heights Drive.
The Intersection is Changing
The traffic lights will be removed and the intersection will transition from a signalized intersection to a roundabout. The transition is being planned to minimize impacts on motorists.
What to Expect
- Overnight Transition: The work is expected to take approximately 10–12 hours and will be completed overnight, where possible. We are tentatively targeting one night between September 10 and 17. The date is subject to change based on weather and operational requirements.
- Avoiding the Back-to-School Rush: The work will be scheduled outside the peak back-to-school hours.
- Advance Notice: The specific date and timing will be shared in advance once the schedule is finalized. Stay tuned for updates.
After the Transition
- Active Construction Zone: The intersection will remain an active construction zone. Motorists should continue to follow all signs and directions from traffic control personnel and use caution when travelling through the area.
- Traffic Patterns: During construction, traffic will use a single lane through the roundabout. The location and configuration of lanes may change as construction progresses. The completed roundabout will have two lanes.
- Schedule: Construction remains on target for completion by the end of 2026.
We Hear You. It’s Frustrating.
We know construction has been challenging, particularly in an area with limited alternative routes. Keeping traffic moving while construction continues is a delicate balance, and we understand the frustration.
We appreciate motorists' patience and understanding as we work toward completing this project. We are looking forward to seeing it completed as much as you are.
The City of St. John’s will provide updates on traffic interruptions and progress throughout the duration of the project. You can follow progress for this project at EngageStJohns.ca and/or subscribe to receive the latest City news and advisories.
