Year of the Arts

On March 27, the Provincial Government announced it would provide $194,000 in funding to the City to support Year of the Arts initiatives.

The Year of the Arts is a provincial government initiative that celebrates Newfoundland and Labrador’s unique and colourful arts community. In recognition of the Year of the Arts, the City is proud to leverage its arts and cultural programming, developing projects that will enhance vibrancy in the City.

This funding will allow the City to introduce the following new initiatives:

  • Markets - The Downtown Pedestrian Mall has become one of the most well-known attractions in the capital city. This year, we will offer markets every second Thursday evening throughout July and August featuring local vendors, artists, and makers with busker-style entertainment.
  • Music on Water Concerts – The City is excited to host two concerts at the Downtown Pedestrian Mall this summer which will feature local musicians.
  • Downtown Pedestrian Mall Public Art – The City is excited to feature the work of our visual artists on new, vibrant signage throughout the Downtown Pedestrian Mall.
  • Year of the Arts Mural – The City will continue to add to the beautification of Harvey Road with a companion piece to the Come Home Year mural that was created in 2022. This new mural will be located on the eastern portion of the Harvey Road retaining wall.

More information regarding these initiatives will be provided within the coming weeks.
