City Enhances Accessibility with New Rest Areas

During public engagement for the 2024-2026 Accessibility Plan, the City heard that accessibility in parks and trails is important. We are pleased to announce the installation of new accessible rest areas in two local parks. The initiative was made possible through an Accessible Communities Grant awarded by the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador's Department of Municipal and Provincial Affairs.

The grant funded the purchase and installation of eight accessible rest areas, located at Bidgoods Park in the Goulds and Rotary "Sunshine" Park. Each site will feature four benches designed to include CSA B651-23 Accessible Rest Area Seating Standards.

The design aims to ensure that all community members can enjoy the trails comfortably and safely. Key features of the new rest areas include:

  • Enhanced Accessibility: Rest areas are set on large, level, colour contrasting, concrete bases, strategically placed adjacent to accessible trail routes,
  • Inclusive Design: Benches include one armrest on either the left or right side, accommodating users' varying needs, and
  • Spacious Adjacent Area: Provides ample space for mobility devices, strollers, or service animals.

The City plans to implement this accessible rest area design in other projects including the shared-use paths.
