Shared-use paths are used by people walking, cycling and wheeling. Paved shared-use paths are designed to be accessible for people of all ages and abilities. They are wheelchair-friendly, stroller-friendly, and provide a safer and smoother surface for all users, regardless of their mobility or physical limitations.
As part of building an active transportation network in St. John’s, there are several shared-use path projects in various stages of development.
Where possible, the city is including design and construction work within other roads and rehabilitation projects. This allows us to reduce overall costs and avoid future tear up. It also taps into existing federal and provincial cost-sharing funds to further reduce the overall costs to the city.
A shared-use path is currently under construction from Kings Bridge Road to Columbus Drive

This trail will provide a connection from the east end to the west end of the city, with many amenities and parks and destinations along the route.

A street re-build with a new shared-use path is planned on Canada Drive from Columbus Drive to the Team Gushue Highway. A shared-use path will be installed on the south side of the street along with road reconstruction and an upgraded sidewalk on the north side of the street. The Crosstown Shared-Use Path will extend from the Trailway at Bowring Park to Logy Bay Road, enhancing connectivity across the city. Although some sections have been in place for over a decade, the city is working to complete this important connection by filling in gaps and extending the route.
Work will begin in 2025 on the eastern section of the route, from Portugal Cove Road to Logy Bay Road. For background information, updates and more details, visit the project page at EngageStJohns.ca.
Design work is ongoing for other areas of the Crosstown Shared-Use Path, which will extend the path westward from Portugal Cove Road to the T’railway in Bowring Park.
