Municipal By-Election for Ward 3 Councillor November 5, 2024

The by-election for the vacant Ward 3 Council seat will take place on Tuesday, November 5, 2024.

A by-election is required following the resignation of Ward 3 Councillor Jamie Korab, effective August 28, 2024. Under the Municipal Elections Act, a by-election must be held within three months of the vacancy occurring.

Nominations & Candidate Requirements

In accordance with Section 14(5) of the Municipal Elections Act, SNL 2001, c.M-20-2, as amended, notice is given that October 1 to 8 are the days on which nomination of candidates for Ward 3 Councillor will take place.

Nominations must be in writing and state the name and residence of the candidate and be signed by the proposer and seconder. The proposer and seconder must be eligible to vote in this election, meaning they must be a Canadian citizen, 18 years of age or older and ordinarily a resident in Ward 3 of the City of St. John’s for the 30 days immediately preceding election day.

Pursuant to Section 15 of the Municipal Elections Act, SNL 2001, c.M-20-2, as amended, a person is qualified to be nominated as a candidate for Ward Councillor if he or she is:

  • A Canadian citizen, 18 years of age or older and eligible to vote in an election in the City of St. John’s
  • Not in arrears of taxes or other charges payable to the municipality of St. John’s
  • Ordinarily resident in the City of St. John’s for a period of 30 days before the commencement of the nomination period or resident in an area that, on Election Day, is part of the City of St. John’s.

Vote-By-Mail

The City will once again be using a vote-by-mail system for the upcoming by-election. Residents of Ward 3 are encouraged to check the voters list to ensure they receive their vote-by-mail kit at the correct address. To learn if you are in Ward 3, you can use the Ward Look-Up feature on the City website.

The City relies on the permanent list of electors provided by Elections NL. If you have recently moved and/or reached the voting age of 18, you may not be on the voters list. To determine if you are on the list and/or to register if you are not, visit the Voter Registration Portal.
