Designating Your Building
Homes, buildings and structures may be designated if they have heritage value or significance. This is typically assessed based on:
- Architecture – including style, age, construction methods, design, notable architects, or associations with important people, events or historical context.
- Environment – how the building contributes to its surroundings, such as its role in a streetscape, neighbourhood character, or as a local landmark.
- Integrity – the extent to which the building retains its original features, materials and overall condition.
Heritage designation applies to the exterior of a building only. It does not affect the interior or provide public access to private property. Designated buildings remain privately owned—the designation simply guides and manages changes to the building’s exterior.
Why Get Designated?
Recognition and Pride
Your property is formally recognized as part of St. John’s built heritage. A heritage plaque highlights its story and contribution to the community, creating a visible sense of pride and identity.
Funding
Owners of designated heritage buildings can apply for funding to help offset the costs of exterior work and conservation. These programs are designed to make maintaining a heritage property more manageable.
Flexibility
To support long-term viability, designated heritage buildings may be considered for a broader range of compatible uses, subject to Council approval. This flexibility can help owners adapt buildings while preserving their character.
Community Character
Heritage designation helps protect the unique look and feel of our neighbourhoods. By maintaining historic buildings, you’re contributing to a stronger sense of place and supporting cultural and tourism value in the city.
