Community Gardens

Community gardens are a valuable part of our neighbourhoods, helping residents grow and access fresh, healthy, and affordable food. Community gardens are not only a source of nutritious food, but they contribute to overall well-being by bringing people together, creating stronger and more connected communities. Supporting and promoting community gardening is a key initiative within the City of St. John’s Healthy City Strategy, as we work together to build a healthier and more inclusive city for everyone.

Community Garden Benefits

Community gardens provide residents with meaningful opportunities to connect with their neighbours and others in the area. Benefits of these spaces include:

  • Helping people, families, and neighbourhoods stay healthy
  • Providing opportunities to eat more fresh fruits and vegetables
  • Encouraging physical activity
  • Supporting mental health
  • Creating connections between people
  • Sharing skills and knowledge across generations and cultures
  • Inspiring other community projects and ideas

City-Led Community Gardens

City-led community gardens are shared spaces managed by the City where residents and groups can grow food, learn new skills, and connect with others through gardening.

Located at 35 Carrick Drive, the Paul Reynolds Community Garden welcomes both individuals and groups with an interest in gardening. The garden features fruit trees, raised beds, a shared Community Bed, and wheelchair-accessible planting areas. This garden is currently full.

The Victoria Park Community Garden, located at 34 Sudbury Street, is open to individuals and groups who enjoy gardening. Situated on the east side of the park near the playground, the garden features raised wooden beds for community use. This garden is also currently full.

The new H.G.R. Mews Community Garden is located at 60 Backler Avenue. This space is open to individuals and groups and strives for a high level of accessibility including a paved entry and design for wheelchair accessibility, as well as beds that are raised to various heights. The community garden space is located along the Mundy Pond trail and near all of the amenities of the H.G.R. Mews Community Centre. This garden is currently full.
